Hi all,

I'm not sure if anybody can help identify what's happening to my wolf fish. It looks like his skin (not his scales) is actually cracking and peeling away from his body. I can see his meat underneath. He has fungus all around it (white) and around his mouth. It literally looks like his skin is being peeled off his body and there are other areas that are 'cracking' where it looks like the skin will be separating soon. Honestly, I can't believe he's still alive! He may very well be dead by morning. It also looks like he has mouth and fin rot - his tail is actually bleeding.

Not sure if this has anything to do with it, but after being moved to a new tank (along with the same tankmates from the previous tank) his mid-section looked darker (where it's peeling now), and his appetite decreased (not sure if I actually ever saw him eat). Then, over this past weekend the tank cracked and all the water drained out - short of about an inch above the substrate, so he was exposed to the air for a while but still able to breathe enough to stay alive (along with the rest of the fish).

A few of the other fish have fin rot and fungus, probably as a result of the stress of nearly dying and damage to their scales from being dried out (secondary bacterial and fungal infections). But the wolf fish looks like he's just coming apart - literally. We're treating with Maracyn Plus. The third dosage is tomorrow (today, since it's 1:00 am).

Any ideas?

Thanks!

He's still not eating, but the 'meat' where the skin has fallen off looks healthy (doesn't look red/ulcer-like. Tough fish! I hope he makes it since we originally saved him from someone who didn't take care of him. He was waaay underfed and I literally almost couldn't identify him as a wolf fish. We got him healthy and now this!

Oh, wow. Usually this kind of wound leads to fluid and electrolyte imbalances. I don't know what the osmotic needs of a wolf fish are, though! :( Keep that water pristine, man. That's just amazing. I don't think the skin will grow back, so you're now taking on the role of protecting his tissues. Better find out as much as you can. I don't even know what his long term needs would be as far as how much salt to add, etc.

I'm not saying he's dead meat, just that he's meat.
