is my GSP smart? does anyone else's puffer do this? i would look at my tank and see my bigger GSP emerging from the substrate, looks covered in sand like it was just playing and rolling around in it, i havent saw exactly what its doing yet, but i also see when it rises that it seems to sift sand out through its gills and the one day i actually saw it pick up a piece of crushed coral, chew on it and spit it back out. do you think my GSP is trimming its own teeth? i notice that my shells i scattered around my tank for decoration started to have edges missing from them that definitely look like bite marks. are GSP's one of those puffer species where the teeth grow a lot and need trimming eventually or is this something that i dont have to worry about as long as their is something for them to trim on. this same puffer i would see take a bite at my live rock a while ago, but hasnt done it in a long time. also, that time is coming for teeth trimming for my F8 puffers. my one i noticed a few days ago that its starting to look like bugs bunnys teeth, it still is able to eat and all so i know i have to do this soon. what is the best way to tranquililze my F8 puffers? i figured since one has to be done i might as well do the other. is clove oil the best way with cuticle clippers? im going to be nervous doing this as i have never ever had to do maintenance on a fish itself, only the tanks. i have read articles and watched youtube videos so i have a good idea, just want to know the best way of doing this. thanks guys :headbang2go dedicated puffer keepers!!

p.s just read an article on the puffer forum, well not completely done reading but damn close, on a huge mess of IP's in a puffer. craziness! makes me not want to feed clams, mussel's etc, but you kind of have to, im definitely making sure i freeze my stuff and soak it in some sort of vitamins every time i feed and soak in anti parasitic meds every couple months.

How do you think they keep their teeth trimmed in the wild?

haha yeah i figured if they didnt have something to help wear it down they would improvise, but i constantly put crabs, crayfish, snails etc in there. very cool though.

In answer to your Q, yes puffers are very smart!

yeah i have definitely picked up they are very smart. a crab i put in my tank scurried under a small piece of my live rock after the puffers took a shot at him. for 10 minutes i would see my puffers going over to the spot they saw the crab last and searching around, go away for a few minutes then come back and kept going for a while! i was surprised to see that they actually remembered where exactly the crab was. they arent smart enough to know im not food though! everytime i start getting ready to feed them they come to the top of the tank and i can actually get my one GSP to come out of the water an inch or so trying to get my finger!
