Hey there, I was wondering if you could use any kind of wood in a fish tank?

Is it safe to use a branch from a regular tree in the back yard?

you can use wood, but you cant use live wood.

look up DIY driftwood, or buy it

I wouldn't, the would can carry parasites and harmful bacteria. I would throw in some driftwood. safer and looks much better.

+1
He nailed it :headbang2

should be fine, I would however not advise useing green wood. Unless you want to wait for it to dry up pick out some dead/dry chunks. Give them a good boil and go for it. Oh and use hard woods b/c the soft stuff makes a mess. And the guy talking about it carrying harmful parasites and bacteria is wrong, wild driftwood is way more likely to have bio hazard on it than somthing you find all dried up in your back yard, either way a good boil makes either of them safe, pathology wise.

Well there is a branch outside and I like the look of it. It has been laying in the snow for more than 2 months so Im pretty sure its dead.

do you know what kind of wood it is? pine/maple/oak etc?

You want something that's been dead longer than 2 months, i think.
