I am looking to set up a 450 litre tank (approx 111 Gallons) and I am wondering, besides personal preference, what will be the better material to make a stand out of.. Wood or metal?? It will be running a sump filtration set up which will made out of a standard 4ft tank.. Any help would be greatly appreciated :D

I prefer metal cuz I like the raw look of it but a cabinet would be good since u using a sump so it won't show. I'm using metal now and will be doing a sump but my tank will be set up in the garage so looks to me doesn't matter.

Hiding the sump won't be an issue, as it will be part of the display and it will be planted :) Just making sure that there is no load bearing difference between metal and wood.. I am trying to convince my other half that wood will be better and cheaper :grinno:

Metal would be stronger but wood would be alot cheaper. Like what was said above there is no point in going metal for a 450L tank so save yourself some money and go with wood.

Metal is stronger and lasts a hell of alot longer when dealing with fresh water, salt water on the other hand eats even the most well protected metal faster than wood.
in your situation seeing as wood is cheaper i would go with the wood. Also because the tank is not that huge.

I would go with wood. It looks better than metal and give you storage for hiding things..........

I really like tube steel stands, as seen in my build thread.

they last longer than any tank will, and I used one with saltwater for 5 years. all that was there was some light surface rust that I sanded and repainted as I recently converted that tank back to freshwater.

the only problem is they are hard to get unless you live in Canada, where a local manufacturer makes them and ships them all over this country.

outside of canada, I hear they are expensive and hard to get unless you go custom made, and then they are a lot of cash.

up here, they are cheap.
