The stand for my 135 is looking kind of warn. There is water damage on the front of the stand where water has sat long enough to cause the sealant to wear off and the wood has some lifting in the grain.

Since the tank is in use, and I'd like to simply prevent further damage I was wondering if I can use a fine sand paper to smooth out the wood and remove the remaining sealant. The issue is that I don't want to mess up the color of the wood. The last thing I want to do at this point is re-stain and seal the entire stand and canopy.

So do I have the right idea so far?
What brand of sealant would you recommend using?
or Should I just leave it be until I'm ready to do the entire stand and canopy?

Here are some pics of the area i'm trying to repair. looking closely I'd be
cleaning up the top portion of the entire length of the tank. from the front of the tank down to the top of the cabinet doors.

Just use some Min wax water based polycrylic sealer.I did the same thing to my old stand, except I varnished the whole thing. When applying it use a brush.Slightly flood the brush and smear it on,and then make one stroke in one direction. Get the excess sealant off the brush and then make one more stroke to even things out.You don't want to keep brushing,it will mess it up.Make sure there are no drips.

After you have applied the first coat then use some very fine sand paper or steel wool and lightly sand until the surface is smooth.Don't sand enough to were it takes the varnish off, just so that it's smooth.Do this one more time and that's it.Two coats should be efficient enough.

So Patrick should I start off by slightly sanding down the wood and then follow the instruction you suggested. or just apply the sealant and skip the initial sanding?

Sorry about that, yeah you want to sand it down before applying, just enough to get the old varnish off. From the looks of that stand there's not much on there to begin with.Lightly sand with fine SP till the wood looks a little dry and then start your first coat.Apply a second or third coat if nessessary.Lightly sand between coats. You should not feel wood when your done.

If when your done with your last coat and you rub your hand across the surface of the wood and it doesn't need anymore sanding then don't.
