I want to add some branches to my tank but can't find anything in the local stores. Can I go out into the jungle and and grab some hardwood like oak, strip the bark and put it in the tank?

It would need to be cleaned up first. Soaked, boiled, and scrubbed.

What part of MD do you have jungle??

Not a real jungle but the state is actually pretty densely wooded. I've gotten lost walking off the fire trails looking for a better fishing spot.

I don't think I'll be able to boil anything big enough to suit me needs.

is it sunny in Maryland? If so you can strip the bark and leave the wood in the sun, after about a year it'll be dry and ok to use, oak would bleach also which would mean white wood..............cool!!

I've read that using driftwood that was actually taken from a flowing river is best to use... something about the way the wood is worn away from the water... if i can find the page it was on, i will edit this post =)
