i have some hard wood that was bought at a chain petstore 2 years ago. I used it for a year or so. I gave it to my lil bro. His tank was wiped out by columnaris(I think) Long story short is that it has been laying dry in a bin in my basement for at least 4 months. If i were to use it again would it be safe? Should i bake it first?

Too big to boil. I put it a 5 gallon bucket with hot water out of the tank. Im baking it now at 400 F for 30 mins! Should be yummy! Think the baking will work.

YUP...baking will work....should be nice and dry as well....may not sink......Just pour boiling water on it in any container large enough to hold it.....let cool....repeat 2-3 times.....ermmmm, try not to burn the house down...lol

Hahah yeah i baked it 45 mins at 400. It was really dry looking and had split in the oven. I than gave it a good soak in cold water. I already put it in tank. I think its the type of wood that just plain sinks. It was bone dry out of oven but sank like a stone. I hope all is okay. I have since read that columnaris can only survive in distilled water for 32 days. So im guessing 100 plus days dry would kill it. Hmmm who knows. I do not think it could survive a real good baking like that

Remember to save the drippings for things like stuffing and sauces....mmmmmmmmm....yummmy..
