Hi, I was hoping to get a bit of advice on this stand. I am pretty happy with a quote I've had on a 14 x 4 x 2 ft fish tank, 3100 litres roughly, so just on or over 3 tonne weight. This is going in my garage which I have recently insulated and turned into a fish room. My dad has offered to build me a stand for all the tank, right the way around the walls of the garage. We are planning on doubling up on all the wood for the frame with 3x2's. Does this sound like it would be strong enough? Is there anything else I should be thinking about here?

Any advice much welcome, thanks

Remember that a standard 2x4 is rated at approx. 3400lb parallel load rate. So if you could brace and stiffen enough you could get away with 3 - 2x4's to carry your weight. Of course the bracing and stiffening of 3 vertical legs will be impractical.
When I built my last large tank stand I used about 24 - 2x4 legs and then braced them all really well laterally. This was for a 10'x4' footprint with an approx. weight of 5000lbs plus.
Good luck and post some pics when you start into your build.

It comes down to the design of the stand and how much open space you need under the tank. Doesn't matter if its 4' long or 24' long. Wood on wood construction with enough legs and it can be built out of single 2 X 4's.

Cheers for the replies, I will post pics once we're up an running with it. I think it sounds like the doubling up on 2x4's looks ok then, an I will just try an double brace it everywhere too. I was thinking about breeze blocks under it, but there's a possibility i will run a sump under it yet, although it's probably doubtful
