i just started digging my pond. I decided to ditch the cinderblock idea for an above ground pond. This decision was in part to my discovery of 45mil liner in my garage from a ditched effort by my folks last summer. I can only work at night as the temperature reaches the mid 100s where i am. I want it to be 5x3x3. I guess this means i need at least a 13x11 sheet w/ 1' overhang. its dumb that i haven't measured the sheet yet. I just started digging and i've got 1'6'' feet. I should probably measure the liner tomorrow.

anyways. any suggestions or tips to help with the process?

well since im from your neck of the woods and just built my pond this weekend (during the day) i would definatly do it at night. keep the ground moist and make sure all the dirt is packed hard when finished otherwise when you walk on the sides it gives and can cave in....would really suck.

good luck and have fun?

P.S. if your anywhere in the fontana pomona rancho area, digging is tough with all the rocks and that hard desert stuff they call dirt.

One tip is to just keep at it. I've got a pond that was supposed to be done in early May and Im still digging. Although it is 12'x12'x3'.

whoops, i meant "good luck and have fun!" no questions about it lol.

but ya, keep at it and post pics. lots of pics during digging and all. i wish i would have taken more pics of mine while digging, but it was too hot to really think about it.

i finished tonight. last night i filled the dig w/ about a foot of water. well it must've worked to soften the ground. thanks for the tips native and green.

i dug to about mid thigh and ran out of liner. i couldn't have made a bigger pond. so i packed the earth, checked for sharp rocks, and filled. i dont have a preliner in. my pond is on the small side, i wanted depth more than area. So the final pond, now filled w/ water and housing a turtle is about 5'6''x3'x2'6''.

unfortunately i didn't get pictures of the dig, but i do have pictures of her getting filled up. i'll post those soon (im at my gf's right now).

then i'll post pictures of the landscaping and enclosing (don't want my turtle escaping). that work i'll do tomorrow. :headbang2

Wow that sounds so cool!

And you took a month! I made a little pond before and it took me ages, and the result was pretty dodgy as well!
