Hi all, Im always browsing this site and have posted only twice about a pleco.
Im only 17 years, so its impossible to work at a big chain. I have one mom and pop shop thats relatively close - they sell both fish and reptiles. I own beardies and currently a tank full of "nooby fish." Thats what got me into the hobby. Setting up a 55 gallon soon. Anyway, would I have no chance of getting a job at this place?I know a lot about fish and reptiles, but of course I dont know everything. Everytime something new to me comes up, Im always wanting to learn about it.

I thought this would be a good place to ask:) Live in Illinois btw, bout 45 mins from chicago.

If you're hard working and ready to learn I can't see why they wouldn't hire you! I too am trying to work at some form of fish or pet store over this summer whether it be my favorite LFS or petco

Well, I went in there a few weeks ago to ask. I hadnt seen the place until then. It was small and rather run down with one youngish guy working there.. to get to the point, I was rather intimidated haha, so I just looked around. I figured if people here have some positive input, Ill give the store a call this time and ask.

It won't hurt to ask, don't act like you know it all, but at the same time show that you do know about the basics such as the nitrogen cycle and proper stocking levels and compatability. They may want someone extremely knowledgeable or someone who needs full training, you won't know until you ask. At worst they'll say no and you can always ask what you could do to help get you a job next time.

I got my job at a local pet store because of my knowledge on fish, even having some, especially the skill of explaining the cycle to a moronic, stubborn customer. Sadly I work at a pet store, so had to learn all about dog food which is the stores main seller...

The only way to find out is to try. Its really that simple. Be it your first job or if you're applying for a promotion to a six figure position, if you don't try you won't get hired. What's the worst that will happen, they say no? Heck, even if they do say no, you can still take something positive from it. Experience. Every failed application is a chance to learn how to better yourself and to make yourself more marketable. Go try. Let us know how it goes.
