A guy brought in a betta tonight. It was DEAD. He said he purchased it 8 hrs prior. I immediately gasped. How exactly do you kill the hardiest fish available in 8 hours? I tested his water. pH was at 9.5

I almost asked him how much water he was adding to the sodium hydroxide he was keeping the betta in. How do you get a pH of 9.5? I tested it twice, with two different test kits. You should have to take a class to own fish.

Beautiful story Ewurm,
I had a guy the other day who had a pH of 5 - for guppies! Tap water round here is 8.5 so there's a massive difference between our water and his.
Me: "so how often are you doing water changes?"
Guy "I don't need to do water changes, do I?"

I started to cry...

should just give him a goldfish cracker

They're snacktastic. I bet that guy could kill a cracker in 8 hours.

It is easier to accept a Ph of 5 for the guppy, than the 9.5 for the beta.

At least he wasn't washing up his goldfish bowl with washing up liquid like someone I know was and asked me why his fish kept dying! After a couple of questions found out straight away!

Some people should not own fish. Sell him a cat.
