Why was the other one closed?

I don't think it got out of hand. People were expressing their opinions. The fact that it was closed was ridiculous. I hope it's not because England lost that the thread was closed and all interest was lost in the World Cup as a result. Fair play works both ways. Telling me I should be a gracious winner when we have sore losers makes you no better than me. But closing the thread was wrong.

i was just about to restart this. i go away for TWO DAYS and you guys get a 2000 + thread closed lol. if your busy sore losing, stay away, i wana discuss things civily, and about the rest of the tournament. yey germany '06!!!

ENGLAND V PORTUGAL

well... gotta say, was gutted afterwards, but ahwell. gd luck for the rest of it portugal. gotta say it annoyed me the amount the portuguese players swarm around the ref to entice him into booking a player, but then its the REFS final decision. mind you it did confuse me that the ref and linemen were signaling for completely different things...
rooney being sent off. well lets be fair, ronaldo played that well, he knew rooney would rise to it, and he was stupid and pushed him. even though it was a pathetic push (esp in comparison to figos headbutt lol) there is no disagreeing that that was the reason he got sent off, and not fot the foot to bollocks uncident. i couldnt tell if that was on purpose because he was being rugby tackled by two portuguese players and wanted revenge or because he was finding it hard to stay on his feet and was trying to push himself forward... only he'll know. theres no denying the ref didnt see it though. i was a bit disappointed at ronaldos wink after he got rooney sent off, i thought that was very unsporting esp. as they are club team mates. i think england actually played the best they had played all tournament with 10 men, and without beckham. i think lennon played great when he came on, and would have been better than beckham from outset. crouch was brilliant, and did what rooney couldnt, hold the ball up. in fact rooney was crap. this was because of sven sticking him byhimself so he cant play his game. hmm whatelse was there. o yea i seem to remember everyone wondering why hargreaves? he was the best player on the pitch! he played his heart out and thats all anyone could ask. i wouldnt have said that portugal had any decent chances really, ronbinson was forced to make one save that wasnt directly at him, and that supposed to be a cross (lucky your forward couldnt reach). i think penalties were fair enough in the end i suppose. Lampard is a loser. why was he there? dissapointing from gerrard too. i think having to retake a pen is harsh, esp when you practice a penalty, and was obviously a good one. i mean what do you do? take the same type of penalty or just go the other way. puts you in a predicament. **** pens in general, but ricardo did well all the same. the first portuguese pen was best. ferdinand hugged ronaldo at the end so all was fine in that part of man u lol.

o yea did anyone watch the replay of ronaldo head butting/pushing rooney?

good luck portugal, but its still a tough road ahead

ha did everyone see the racism thing at the start of the game. that was for the portuguese fans.

i duno really. was it just the one portuguese first team player out now? how many first team french are out. i missed the brazil france game (i'd had as much football as i could take that day LOL). were they good? based on the performances ive seen it could go either way. i think it depends on who has the best day. if france play their best and as a team, they should beat portugal, but i duno, won't be easy.

i would also fancy germany to beat italy. i think germany may go on to win it to be honest

Here are my thoughts on the match:

It definetely a hard fought match. I wasn't absolutely certain of the exact match statistics so I went onto the FIFA world cup official website to see some statistics. Portugal had 9 shots on goal, and maybe 1-2 could have been for a goal. England had 4 shots on goal but I'm not sure any had a chance of going in. England had 9 total shots. There was that opportunity where Lampard blatantly put it over when he should have put it into the back of the net. Fairly even on corner kicks. 1 Free kick the entire 120 minutes and that went to England but I believe the ball sailed over the bar. 2 yellows and a red for England and 2 yellows for Portugal. Now, to address Rooney's red card. I believe in those circumstances, it would normally be a foul on Ricardo Carvalho, and England would get the ball at midfield. However, Rooney stepped on Carvalho's junk, and there's absolutely no denying that he did so. You can debate whether or not it was with malicious intent, but the Referee was no more than a yard away when this happened. I believed he was going to give a red card either way, however he couldn't do so because a lot of players immediately ran up to him. Ronaldo stated after the game that he never asked the ref. to give Rooney a red, all he said was that it was a foul. I felt Portugal played better the first 45 minutes of the game. Possession however was fairly equal. England was playing well, exactly the same formation as Portugal. 4-5-1 is how we typically play and we're incredible at doing so. England, not so much so. I saw little from Joe Cole and even less from David Beckham. Becks really disappointed me. Figo on the other hand was almost non-existant for the Portuguese as well. I felt Ronaldo did the best job of pushing the ball forward and starting those quick Portuguse counter-attacks that we're accustomed to seeing. I'm gonna cut down on what I say otherwise this would be very long. England played their best soccer when they went down to 10 men. Took becks out for Lennon and Cole out for Crouch. There was virtually no connection however between the English midfield and Crouch. He didn't get very many touches on the ball in or around the box. Lennon was a little pistol. Extra time. It was obvious that England showed no initiative. Portugal dominated and could have scored. Penalties. We won. Coin Toss. Carragher took his penalty without the referee having blown his whistle yet, so it didn't count. He missed his retake, it happens. England could have and should have won. We were without Deco and Costinha. Deco is the motor that powers the national team. Tiago did little in his place. I felt we played better for the total 120 minutes. Were there dives? Sure. It happens. It's football. Players dive on occasion. English players took a few dives too, don't think they didn't.

Now we move onto the French. I'm optomistic. I think we can win the world cup. I hope we do. Nobody should ever be content with losing. You should always want to be the best, and that's what I want for Portugal.

Woot! Portugal's second World Cup Semi Final appearance.:grinyes:

Portugal and France have no players out for the semi's. Trust me. I double checked to see if Zidane had a second yellow.

Probable Portuguese starting 11

Ricardo: Nuno Valente, Fernando Meira, Ricardo Carvalho, Miguel: Costinha, Maniche, Deco: Ronaldo, Pauleta, Figo

:D

and France is Zidane and Ribery plus 9

I assure you I do not like to taunt. It's when I hear words such as cheated, divers, etc that really gets me annoyed. I said the same thing when the Greek defeated us in '04 so I understand if English fans are unhappy that we defeated them. Totally understandable. And I don't mean to start another flame war, but the English are some of the worst sore losers I have ever encountered in my life. And I've encountered plenty of it on other sports related forums. Things such as, "If Ronaldo were here, I would kill him". "If he goes back to Man U, Rooney better pop him in the mouth". "Die Portugal, Die". "I'll f-ing kill you". etc.
