Hi MFK

I have a lot of blood worms/ mosquito larvae in my cansiter filter. Why are they there?

I keep Gars and birchirs and feed them market fish. There is a possibilty its because of my left over market fish which ended up inside my filter.

anyway to get rid of them?

Thanks guys!

Mosquitoes lay their eggs in water. The eggs hatch into larvae (bloodworms are the larvae of a mosquito). Prevent the mosquitoes from laying their eggs in your tank, and you won't have a problem with the larvae ending up in your filter.

Is your tank outside? In order for bloodworms to occur in your filter usually bird poop will complete the lifecycle. One of my tanks were outside and this tank had an infestation in one of my ac110 sponges. Come to find out birds knocked the cover off to access the water in the filter and at the same time pooping in the filter.

Mosquitoe larvae look nothing like bloodworms. The bloodworm is the larvae of a non-biting midge. Also, mosquitoe larvae need air to live, they stay connected to the surface with a tube so they can breath, very unlikely they would be in a canister because they like non-moving water.

What color are these worms you are seeing the filter, and size?

MY Problem is that my Gar's birchir's dont even touch them i do have a wave maker to agitate the water surface.

yes my tank is outdoors but i do have it properly covered due to my fishes being powerfull jumpers.

Yes They look like those on the 2nd pic of the right. which are blood worms those guys wiggle around similar to larvae?

^ Yep those are bloodworms on the right, they come from non-biting midges, they kind of look like mosquitoes I guess. There are lots of fish that love to eat them too, are they just in the canister or do they get blown back into the tank?

They are all in my canister. Sometimes they will be blown back into the tank.. the problem is the fishes i keep do not eat them :(

Can you put a cichlid of some sort in with them, one that will like bloodworms and get along with the others.
