so i think maybe my bichir ate a peace of gravel.. or something that he can not digest.. because any time he i feed him, (this last time) two massavore pellets, he gets a weird bulge on his bottom side, about an inch or two from his head.. he does not seem to be passing anything through. he's about 10 or 11in Ornate. has anyone ever had this problem? what should i do? the last time i fed him, he kept the bulge for about 2 days then puked everything up. i waited about 4 days to feed again, and he has the bulge again..

any advice would be much appreciated.

bichirs and gravel substrate are not a good combo. Change to sand.

Yep go sand or something like calico stone. Either small enough to pass or too big to eat. They will swallow gravel and sometimes can't pass it. Don't know what u can do sorry hope it works out

I think that when he's eating it he can fit it down his mouth but it doesn't rotate the way it has to to pass through is instestines so he can pass it. If it was gravel then the problem would go away and come back. And +1 on the sand not only does it look better, but it's easier to clean, and it looks way more natural and the polys like it to.

My Congicus gets this bulge on his underside just past the gills. After he eats his stomach gets full but after a day or two he then gets this bulge that last a couple days. Bichirs can spit out gravel I seen them do it all the time when they suck up feeders and accidentally suck some gravel I see them either spit the whole feeder back out or hold the feeder and spit out gravel. I wouldn't worry about it as long as he still eats normally.

i wonder if the stomach acids are strong enough to dissolve the gravel.

I had a delhezi that swallowed a piece of gravel. He passed it but it tore his butthole on the way out. It was bleeding and everything. He healed tho. Ended up being fine. Just do a switch to sand quickly. Don't keep taking chances. Black sand with an ornate will look amazing.
