Well I am about 75% saved up and all set to buy my 240 gallon tank in march, for my balas. Today I got crushing news, my engine in my main car is seized up. Now driving the backup care as I have been for the past 3 months. This means I will likely have to put off my tank.

I really don't want to have to give up my bala's they are all about 4 inchs now. Anyone with experince with these fish, have any realistic Idea of how long I have before they need a bigger tank.

I am trying to figure out if I need to start looking for anew home for them.

you still have a while, at that size they are not in dire need of an upgrade (although it's always nice)

any one have good solid figures on a time frame on the growth to 9 inchs.

I have bala sharks i used to have them in a 55 and now they're in my 175...

they've only grew 2 inches... i bought them at 1.5 about a year ago.

so you're pretty much good for another year.

yaeh the balas are pretty much good in the 55 for another year, jsut have really good filters.

That sucks man! Good luck, and whatever you decide do whats best for the fishes, which is probably keeping them yourself.

youll be alright for quite a while, and thats a mighty big upgrade IMO

I had a similar setup. I kept my balas in a 55 until they were about 4 inches and then purchased a larger tank. They eventually got to the 9" mark, but, it took 3-4 years after the transfer (if my memory is correct as this was 8 years ago). As others have said, you should be fine for a while. Total time from 2" to 9" was ~7 years.

Thank you all for you input, I have been really stressing about this, I had planned to step down my upgrad plans and get a 125. If I can make it another year that will give me time to save back up.

I like most MFK's over filter, and have stepped up to 2 x 50% WC a week, since I stopped using R/O water.

id say if u can skip the 125 and get the 240... if you dont feed them alot they wont grow really fast and i think they will be fine in a 55 til 7 inches. i had some balas and the silver dollars always seemed to beat them to the food so they didnt get a ton and they really didnt grow fast at all. or almost grow at all in the 5 months i had them til disaster struck. i think the 240g home will be a better end tank size for them and i feel like its silly to get a 125 and then a 240. the 125 is like a medium grow up tank. might as well wait alittle longer and get the 240
