Curious about your worst lfs story/advice ! The one near me the employee tried convincing me a yellow Severum was a parrot cichlid and they would not breed Bc they are hybrids! Clearly labeled as severums and clearly severums, he then went on to suggest a small Florida gar (yes a gar) and African cichlids as dithers for my acaras Bc my acaras are super aggressive and will kill anything . Pretty bad but I bet there is worse!

I don't have too many. I usually just tell the person what I want. Most don't ask me questions ever.

That sounds like someone doesn't know what they're talking about and just trying to seek fish. Bad combo!

I don't really have a bad experience but I once walked into a fish store about a mile from my favorite fish store and when I walked in, the owner was on the phone yelling and cursing at someone while there were customers in the store. He was just having a tantrum so I turned around and walked right out and never went back to that store again.

For me it's the big chain stores mostly. But there is one LFS near me that used to have knowledgeable staff, but now they are all young kids who probably or don't seem to be interested in fish. I heard this one kid recommend a jag for a 55g. This same kid didn't know that oscars were a SA fish.
The worst advise I got was when I was first really getting into cichlids (before the Internet lol). This guy told me an Oscar can live in a 40g tank for life. I made the mistake of listening to him and should have read books first. That LFS went out of business years ago.

Only thing I ever had happen to me was having a petco "fish expert" employee tell me she couldn't sell me 10 danios because their policy is more than 6 fish is overstocking any tank. Then I told her they were going in a 150 gallon as better quality feeders for my new odoe pike and she freaked out. Other than that I just tell the lfs's what I want and if they question me I tell them not to worry about it lol.

Aside from the horror stories from working at a lfs...

I was talking to the owner to of one of the more popular lfs about my midevil biting me and he advised me to open the lid, wait for the fish to come to the surface... then punch the fish.

Wtf, LMOA!

LOL,if I walked into a shop and caught the owner yelling and cursing at someone on the telephone I doubt that it would affect me to the point that I would walk out and not return to the place.....none of my business, even though he is talking loud enough for me to hear it.
The worst place I can recall was a hole in the wall shop called TradeWinds. It was a cramped little shop with only one aisle of tanks that the fish were displayed in and the rest of the retail space was dry goods and supplies. The shop has been open since the eighties and in fairness I can only call them the worst because back in the pet shop glory days we had good shops all over the city and they all boasted better selections than this place had.
But that was quite a few years ago and one by one they have all closed down.

I remember when I 1st started, the guy at the LFS told me that 3 black Aro is ok for 40g breeder. Well, you know the story after that! BS!
