I've stopped coming here for a bit because it's too depressing.

But anyway, about a month ago, I lost all of my Bichirs within a week.

It all started when my RTC hybrid outgrew his 40 gallon breeder. He got to about 9" in there so I had to move him before he started eating his other tank mates, (small catfish).

I had originally bought him from a Petsupermarket at 2" because I was tired of seeing them being sold there in the usual fashion. I'm raising him and he's currently a little over a foot right now. But he's going into a big pond after he outgrows his 120 gallon.

ANYWAY, I put him in the 75 gallon tank with my Bichirs. They were around the same size, so I figured they'd be okay as a temp thing. Stupid me though...

My poor 8" Delhezi got devoured whole by my 9" RTC. Only maybe half an inch of his tail was sticking out. It was HORRIBLE. :(

I pretty much moved everything else out of there, my 6" Albino, my 9" Senegal, and my 10" Ropefish and put them into the 40 gallon out of despiration.

They ended up all dying in there one after another. I had no idea, but my PH was was under 7.0 and they dropped like flies, I'm guessing that's what killed them anyway.

I was so depressed, with my Senegal especially. I had bought him at 3" from a Petsmart. He almost died on me the night I brought him home but I managed to give him some quick meds with some salt and he was fine the next day, and he got huge after that.

I ended up burying them all in my mom's garden. I Don't think I'll ever buy another poly ever again.

Sorry for your recent luck with polys but, you shouldn't give up for just one bad experience or else none of us would be in the hobby.
Maybe you should take a break but, I wouldn't give up for good.

Additional maybe the rtcxtsn should be given a different home if you don't want to risk it again.

I don't want to give up, in fact, I have a bunch of new fish lol. But I feel like if I bought more poly's I'd be replacing my old lil babies and I'd hate that. I'll hold out on it for now at least.

Once my RTC goes into this gigantic pond at this local cemetary I'll have a big empty tank so who knows.

Want to elaborate?

I'm raising this RTC hybrid I got a while back. There's a nearby cemetery that has a really big circular pond, I think it was at least 10' across and it has a lot of big koi in there. I'm going to donate him to that cemetary once he outgrows my biggest tank so that he can get big and healthy like he's supposed to.

Does the cemetery know you plan on 'donating' it? I'm sure they dont want that RTC destroying their koi.

So why was the PH so different between your two setups?

I haven't really asked them yet but the koi are pretty big. I still have some time left though and if they won't take him there's a few other places around where I live that will easily take a big RTC.

I have no idea honestly, I do the same chemicals and set ups for both of my tanks.

I did have a lot of algae in my 75 gallon tank, really bad thick green algae on this center root piece I had in the tank. A little before all this happened, maybe a month, I took the root, and a few other things out and I haven't put them back in since.

Sorry for your loss.. That is extremely sad to hear.. I hope you dont give up on Polys..

Are you talking private/public aquariums or public bodies of water that it can be released in? Because most public attractions have more than enough RTC', pacu, etc already.

Well there two big fish farms that would easily take it in, problem is, I want him to be kept somewhere and not bought and sold over and over.

There is the Miami Seaquarium but they probably have a lot too, but I'm going to check with them anyways. I have a few other sources, there's this one place down south, a guy owns a huge aquarium that he'd keep big fish in, (forget what the guy's name was but was like that big 15k gallon tank.).

Anyway I have a few options to play with but I'm definitely going to find a good home for him no matter what.
