I do have a junk drawer full of batteries...... rethinking this

There are multiple warnings over the years from fire marshals that 9v batteries, the ones most folks use exclusively for smoke detectors, are a fire hazard because the positive and negative terminals are on the same side of the battery.

wow just need to hear this more often.. so many of us do not take the warnings on things serious enough

I just appreciate the irony that many, myself included, wouldn't have a single 9v in the house if we didn't use them in fire safety devices. Conspiracy theory anyone?

9v and steel wool is one of the many fire starting techniques I was taught as a Boy Scout.

At first I was thinking no way...but I wasn't thinking of it being shorted with something that conducts. So, yes it is very possible. I've messed with car batteries enough to know this threat. Good thing I don't keep used 9Volts around. I do keep AAs and AAAs. Might need to pay more attention to this as well even though it's a little harder.

good info

I always throw out used batteries. I don't know why anyone would keep old batteries. and the good ones I do have are all in the cases or containers they came in.
