My cousin got his spotted gar around the same time that I bought my red swamp crayfish. Five months have passed since then and his gar has attained a considerable length of a foot long. Unfortunately, his parents aren't comfortable with him keeping a fish that only eats live prey and want him to get rid of it. That's why he asked me whether I could take care of it instead. However, my tank is already inhabited by my crayfish. He's extremely agressive as demonstrated by the fact that he literally shreds the feeder shrimp and mealworms that I give him. Is there any possibility that he would leave the gar alone? Or would he attack the gar with his pincers? They can inflict a very painful injury as I know from personal experience(He pinched me once when I was feeding him a live worm and it hurt like hell). After all, although it's twice his size, it's still a fairly delicately built fish and I can imagine those awful pincers doing some terrible harm. Any feedback would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Your friend could always convert the gar to non-live. It's perfectly doable. Mine eats frozen prawns and frozen fish.

Ya know, thats tough to answer actually. I havent seen someone keep those two together. My suggestion, try it out. The crayfish wont kill the gar in one blow. You will see pinch marks on the gars underside, maybe even see him bleed if they crayfish is messing with him. Gars are incredibly tough fish. There undersides are softer but still tough. There top sides and side sides are incredibly tough. There scales are hard to penetrate to inflict a critical wound to it. Give it a try. If the crayfish messes with the gar, then take him out. Goodluck!

Hey, thanks so much for your extremely helpful reply. You obviously know quite a fair bit about gar physiology. Yeah, I'm going to go with your suggestion and see how things pan out. Hopefully, once my red swamp realizes that he can't do much damage to the gar, he'll leave it alone. Cheers

Ah, thanks for pointing that out. The lady who sold it to him said that it couldn't be done but it looks like she was wrong. Aquarium owners in my neck of the woods, don't seem to be exactly the most knowledgeable.
