I have 180 gal. with 1 8 inch oscar,7 inch R D and a 5 inch GT also 2 bala sharks ,, could a Jag work in this mix or should I leave well enough alone?

you could try it depends on how aggressive every one is

well many say the the more less cichlids you have in a large tank the less aggression you'll attain in the tank...but that is sometimes a false statement....the more cichlids you have the more less aggression you get from them all since their are just to many cichlids swimming around in the tank which can't suppress the aggro in a single specimen towards another. Also it depends all in each and every single type of fish....some for example a managuense is called a very aggressive cichlid but in some managuense they are gentle and some are aggressive in temperment. And about having more cichlids in a single tank is not recommended by others cichlid keepers but if you wish to have peace go have an experiment with it.But I must fair warn you the more aggressive carnivores you have the more bioload you get from feeding them. There for you need the very best care in the tank conditions or a fluctuation in the tank waters might and will kill your fish by the way you keep the water cleanliness. And with a manguense in the 180...it all depends on your decision not all of ours.So if you do have a great time with your new managuense.=)

I think it would be fine* without the bala sharks. IME combinations work best at much much smaller sizes....

*Sometimes just one of those guys would pwn a 180

it would be fine

well it all depends on the fishes own attitude....i have a 10-11inch male jag,2 10 inch oscars,6-7inch male vieja biff,2 5 inch balas,1 6inch female jack dempsey,1 5inch senagal birchir,1 20something inch gibbicep,1 7inch severum all been living merrily together for about a year and there was one time thought id lose jag but hes mellowed after i rearranged tank....it works fine for me,BUT YOU NEVER WILL KNOW

Tanks 5ft/2ft/2ft

I guess you wont know untill you try.
My jags are pretty peacefull (I've grown them from babies, always with other tankmates) but Ive seen others that try to fight everyone, and I think some of it had to do with them being a solitary fish in another tank before that...

I don't know, I think you're right in the red zone between having a "proper" stocked tank and having an overstocked community where aggression is spread out, etc, you've heard it before...

The oscar is a little iffy also. They're pretty tough, but not really as aggressive as the other fish you have listed. It would probably work to replace the oscar with the jag, or keep the oscar and add a jag aswell as some other aggressive cichlids to "balance it out".

Oh yeah, and you'd have to get rid of the bala's.
