Hey everyone! I got a Fluval 204, Prism Skimmer, and Aquaclear powerhead for $70. (Woo!)

I have one question- would a protein skimmer provide any benefit for a FW stingray tank? I've heard that they are usually for salt water tanks, but I have it and figured if it would do some good I'll use it.

Fresh water molecules dont bond like salt water molecules, hence the idea of it would be great if it did work, many have tried and all have failed...

i have a massive skimmer filled with bio media i use.... but the skimmer came with my tank. setting up the kind you have is more a waste of power... and it wont do too much good

their are FW skimmers for sale but they are 10 x the size of a SW skimmer

so the normal SW skimmer will be useless

removing heavey organics is good in any tank not just rays

i use a filter media called polyfilter to remove mine its not cheap but it works great

Ah, thank you. I will look into the larger skimmers designed for FW; if anyone has a link to a site selling them, I would really appreciate it.

That said, anyone want a skimmer? :naughty:

Will trade for marble motoro, PDR, or maybe a firstborn child. (I'd even settle for a male retic pup. V_v)

a skimmer that will work for freshwater will cost thousands of dollars... you dont need a skimmer.... forget the idea of a skimmer...

agreed ^

Waste of money and electricity. You are better off just keeping up on your water changes IMO.

I change ~25% 1/week, sometimes twice a week if I'm messing around with the filter media or something like that, so no problems there.

Thanks for saving me the headache of looking into the FW skimmers! :)

How big is your tank? Other stock?

I've got a 125 gallon tank / FX5 / Fluval 204 that feeds into a 10 gallon planted tank waterfall, which feeds into a 5 gallon bucket full of mech/chem/bio media. The tank's inhabitants are one retic (4-5") and two snails.
