IMO the black background with the natural rock looks great. I think if you went with a black substrate it would be too much and make the tank look too dark.

I wouldn't go for black rock in there, I think it would make it to dark.. I do think that sand would look nice in there though.

I agree, it does look very nice. I'm just trying to figure out what the teddy bear / monkey thing is on the left side.

it's supposed to look like a tree root not a bear/monkey.... although in this pic I do what you mean

I would go black on black. with good lighting it looks great. here is my 150 black on black: for reference (this is with 18000K lighting -white with a hint of blue), so your tank will look different if your lights have a different colour temperature): I think it is a sharp look, but then again I am totally biased cause its mine lol
