i have a man made pond that has no rivers streams or creeks attached to it and wanted to know if i could release convicts into it. i live in MI so we have cold winters do you think they would make it?

Very doubtful, convicts are a tropical fish which require warm temps(72 to 80 degrees). I would imagine the pond could get down the mid to low 40s.

Possible you could look into some type native fish.

i agree that would be way to cold. if you could find a way to heat it then maybe they would stand a chance, but that could get expensive.

pond is way to big for heaters.... i had a feeling this wouldn't work.. i might try feeder fish so i have a steady supply for my gars and pike.

I've read most cichlids will die in water below 60*. of course, I wouldn't want mine in a tank below 70*

I once had some con fry survive under an under-gravel filter for a month-and-a-half after I tore the tank down. Oh, and the tank was in my basement in the winter.

Those things are the cockroach of the cichlid world.

All that being said, it's still not likely for them to survive a Michigan winter outside.

ive had some cons in my basement unheated with airstones and powerheads in a 15 gal rubbermaid for most of a winter.. they did fine and are still alive today.. but in a heated tank now...

im not trying to be an ass but there are more ways than that for fish to spread. just the eggs alone have many different traveling methods.
