Would it be a dumb idea?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Don't do it. Use a calcium based substrate for a SW tank. It doesn't necessarily need to be live sand but it should be aragonite.

And please don't put a nem in a newly cycled tank, you'll just kill it. Wait at least 6 months to add a nem. Further to your substrate question, Calcium, Strontium, Iron and other elements that help "AGE" and reef or fish only tank are not in FW gravel. The substrate should be of a marine source, otherwise, potential problems for pH and alkalinity stabilization may occur.

sorry to contradict lkc but it is absolutely plausible and practical to put freshwater gravel in a salt tank i have done it myself and it worked just fine. but if you want to do a reef aquarium use aragonite or play sand (lowes $3 per bag)
