Hi mfk! Now, Ive got another fish in mind: Red terrors thanks to vitaliy and his pictures. How many gallons does a red terror pair need? Minimum tank size? Are they similiar to dempsey requirements? thanks

No. Much bigger than dempseys. A pair will *eventually* need a huge tank. IMO 125 minimum, 180 better, 220 best.

can also be very nasty.i had a female approx the same size as my male jack dempsey and she killed the dempsey within 2 days of going in my tank and the tryed to kill my odoe, and bichirs.she went straight back to my lfs.stunning on there own though as you are intending to do.

ahh so they require 125 tank?
Thats cool because im going to get one soon :)

At what length are they mature? How can you sex them?

If you're really serious about keeping a pair of these fish, I would get a 180. A large male festae is over 12" and upwards of 18 - 20". They're *huge* and very aggressive, especially when paired. You'll need tank dividers, if not a couple of large tanks for seperation, fry etc... Please be smart and plan accordingly from the beginning.

Google "Amphilophus festae" and click on a few article links.

well sexing is unbelivable simple! females and males have very distinct colorings!

just look up some threads about breeding them and u should see some pics! very drastic differences!

females much nicer! IMO and in most every one elses!

Are they really that aggressive? Even more aggressive than jack dempseys?

Are the females the ones that have really nice bright red coloring in them?

I don't consider JD's all that aggressive in general...more territorial. RT's are typically going to blow away a Jack in terms of aggression. And yes the females are the more colorful ones. Males are a beauty in their own way, just not as bright in color.

yea balton is right!

jacks are not even close to that aggressive! if you want aggressive try a male RD

but yea RT's are pretty aggressive much more than most jacks!

When they pair off, they keep their territory free of trespassers. They are a very determined, powerful, and LARGE fish. Much bigger than JDs. IME female festaes are ruthless when preparing for or sitting on a clutch. These fish are the real deal.
