Hey Fellas, I was browsing around MFK as I am interested in try A Non Cichlid route to add!

I had a few Red belly's as a kid but I'm sure everyone did :) I have been looking at Dats, Puffers and Piranha.

Can any one recommend a couple solo variants that are favorites

Thanks

Just wondering if you guys can tell me a little of what excites you about Piranha?

Can one recommend a certain solo

Depends on what size tank you have but sanchezi and spillo are fascinating and if bought young max out at 6-8" plus their colors are beautiful!

But if you got the coin and 75-125gals a elongatus is top of my list especially a black mask elong! They are incredibly aggressive and smart as are most piranha species.

As for dats and putters I can't help you there.

Perfect, thanks for the direction I will look in to them. Here in Toronto we have some shops that carry alot of different Piranah. I now know what to keep my I out for!

for large solo species my vote goes to rhombeus and manueli, however, coming from a cichlid world it can be frustrating at first when it comes to solo piranha as they are very cautious and can take sometime until they open up to you, but once they do it's great.
I would suggest you look through as many pictures of different species of piranhas as possible and find the one that you like the most and go with that one. of course your tank size limitation is a factor as well. and other advise I would give is try to find a large adult specimen if possible as Serra can grow very slowly and often you'll wish you had purchased a larger one but certain specie such as Manueli is very difficult to get fresh imported large specimen, general 5-6" is as big as it gets unless you can find someone is selling one been in captivity for a few years.
it's hard to say what part of piranha excites me, I guess it would be all of it. I've kept many different fish in the past but I always go back to P.
Here's my S. Rhombeus

and here's a picture of a Manueli

I have a different opinion for you in the piranha department. Over the years I have tried sanchezi, red belly, compressus, manueli, geryi and 3 different types of rhombeus in hopes of finding an entertaining fish. Whether it be aggessive, active, smart or all of the mentioned. Well I was let down everytime and the fish were shy, very inactive and definitely not aggessive. Even kept a 10" diamond rhom for at least 4 years plus and I still sold it in the end for pennies. If I were you I would venture into the puffer department. A very entertaining fish. FYI I owned dats too and they are boring and aggessive.

I like dats. Some aggression flies in the face of boring imo. Piranhas are cool too. Have had redbellies, rhoms and gold. All were entertaining when givin the right setting to me. Never had puffers, they look fun too

Thanks Guys for the advice! Both those Piranha are gorgeous! I like the look of the elongatus also. Yes I used to my Solo wet pet Cichlids but I was at a LFS and they had a S.? That would glass bang at my finger :) so I might get lucky!

I would love to have a P. Right now and for my move next year I will also be obtaining a Vittatus Tiger fish :) these two fish are sure to feed my new hunger :)

Ify on the puffer but also a good idea.

Thanks guys I will be watching this section closely

I was going to recommend a puffer also. If you enjoy the personality of cichlids and like a fish that interacts you will love a puffer. Ill be the first to admit I dont have to patience for piranha, my last one I had for 8 months and it did nothing but be cautious of me. it wouldnt eat unless the room was empty and it would spend its whole time someone was watching cowering in a corner. Finally sold it for less than 25% of what I paid for it and that sucker wasnt cheap. Only way I would do piranha again would be a shoal of pygo in a community so there was something other going on.

Puffers are great solo pets if you have the space I had a fahaka not too long ago and a few green spotted years ago. They remind me of dogs in the way they eat and interact with you, I regret selling my fahaka but at the time it was the end of my fish keeping carrier die to a flood if you have the tank space look at mbu great fish not aggressive and get rather large
