I would say that its a bad idea to get a bat ray. Here are a couple of reasons
1. they get huge as in a 5 foot wingspan so good luck finding a tank for that
2. cost for tank
3. cost of food
4. you should have experience
5. most aquariums will not take fish that have outgrown their enclosure or for any other reason simply because they have no room or budget so you will have to care for it its entire life which is around 20 years
6. bat rays like cold water so chilling a tank or should I say swimming pool would be extremely expensive and heating would be horrible too

I suggest if you like the guys so much you should just volunteer or work for an aquarium near you. That has the budget and proper room for bat rays. I would guess you are not a millionaire justI because not too many people are.
Most types of round rays would probably be a much better ray to keep they don't get as big. You could even go with a freshwater stingray if your state laws allow it. I'm unfortunate enough to live in a state where FW stingrays are illegal. Zoodiver knows heck of a lot more than I do so I would talk to him for anymore info.

so you want one of these:

and do know it will grow into one of these:

and possibly over 100lbs like this one:

i can get small ones, but you need a big pool for it.

They start bigger than 12" wing span, I could be wrong but I read they are born at about 3 lbs. I have caught many many babies (or what i think are babies) and they are all about 3 lbs. Good luck if you do this I hope you have a massive pond.

thank you all for the comments but yes i do have a bit of money, not a millionaire, but a few dollars, lol, and a inground pool is my next tank, having addition put on my house just to be able to keep the babys ive already got

It is awesome to know that you have the space for them. I would say then go for it. If you have the financial backing, experience, and a place large enough for them then its not that bad of an idea. Just make sure you do all of your research about husbandry well ahead of time and make sure the cost won't be more than you expect it to be to run and maintain it. Most marine aquatics stores can order them for you. I even have a place here in Merced aka the middle of nowhere in California that can order elasmobranchs for me. So just start looking around stores near you and I'm sure you'll be able to find one.
