I'd like to try a monster planted tank in the future, but I am unsure if the fish I like would destroy plants. I don't really know specific species, but I would like discus, oscars, a FW ray, arowana, bichir, and possibly a gar. I know these live in all different levels of the tank.

Assume its like a 2000 gallon or something...

What about driftwood, fake rock background, or other decor?

:nilly:

if i am correct.. the ray may dig up your plants and the oscars might also

i think the rest of your list is fine...

Oscars and stingrays will. As for gar, I have not kept them but I don't think they might.:)

As said above, oscars, and rays will but the rest sound fine.
Someone with gar experience may chime in and say differently though.

gars are fine with plants
unless they uproot them by swimming through them or something.

Oscars really? I kinda figured the stingrays would, but would if the plants are fixed onto a peice of rock or wood? A plant straight in the sand would probably have to be something really tough I guess.

*drum roll* What about a matamata turtle? That would be a seriously cool addition if I had a shallow enough tank/pond.

Thanks for input!

A mata would eat your fish....

Not if it cant fit in its mouth. They have no beak, they cant bite. It would be awkward to watch it try and eat a stingray or gar :/ But theyre pretty lazy like an alligator snapper so I dont think theyd be too bad with plenty of room, which is needed anyway. At least I dont need a land area.

I have kept stingrays with plants but u need a whole lot of room

I you do stingrays, just keep the plants in pots. They can't really dig them up that way. Oscars will destroy your plants by trying to move them around. They'll also try and move driftwood and rocks and any plants on them as well.
