Hi,
Thinking about getting my first ray (lfs has an 8" diameter motoro I've fallen in love with) and I want to know if these would help (even the smallest bit) if it got scared and stung me.

Also, Is there a way that wouldn't hurt me or the ray of de-barbing it or removing the venom gland thingy?

Thanks!

i think the barb may be able to pierce through that...

i think those gloves are designed to keep ur skin from making contact with the water...

if i was to handle a ray with my bare hands i would use my welding gloves.

just keep ur hands away from its tail.... don't be scared.. if ur scared don't get it...its not for u..

Idont think that the glove will help that much. If they are going to sting you they will the barb is razer sharp. Also no there is no way to de barb them for your home tank. They shed them and grow them back on there own.

What size tank you have?

My ray leaves me alone when i am in there she gets scared and barries her self in the sand. But i also stay away from her. It is not hard to not get stung just know your surroundings.

How much do they want for it? here in Columbus they would want 3-400 for a ray that size! If this is the case save the money and get a smaller one for 150-200 on line. They grow fast!

That makes sense. just give it space and be careful.

My lfs wants $75 for it, they really want to get rid of it because people who have no experience even with fish get scared of it and never come back to the store.

Why do people use the feeding tong thingys?

You dont need those things. You can feed them any number of things but you just drop them in the tank. he will find it. and $75! is it eating in the store? i would tell them thay you want to see it eat first.

People use feeding tongs for rays that are slow eaters either from illness, shipping stress, or from more aggressive eaters in the tank. You can safely get food to the ray with no chance of getting stung. I personally don't use them, but you always have a risk when putting your hands on the bottom of the tank.

That is a really good price for a ray! I would do some research on the rays before purchasing them. But the more you are around them and cautious with them the more you will be safe.

wow.. $75 for a motoro at the LFS is a great deal... what size tank do u have for it at the moment?

if your tank is not too tiny u can buy the ray and then upgrade later. or sell it..

wow.. ur LFS's customers must be all little girls...

just don't stick your hand in the tank and try to pet your new ray, you'll be fine.

I wear industrial no-cut gloves when working in some of my spiney or toothy fish tanks. They're made of kevlar with a woven in metal mesh. These may make you feel more comfortable when working in your ray tank. They can be found in most industrial supply outlets in town and online.

I wouldn't bother trying to remove the venom sac. I've seen other hobbyists remove them. The outcome is usually having the tail atrophy and fall off or, at best, look scarred, misshapen, and ugly.
