G'day,

whilst i was fishing at the local dam yesterday i picked up a few rocks. The earia is prone to blue green algea and there are warning sighns up about it so would these be safe to add to my tank after a good clean? They were not in the water but on and around a man made rock wall that goes all around the damn and when the damn overfills due to floods they prob do get submerged, i just dont want to put anything in my tank that could harm my fish.

Here is where i picked them up-

Just wanting to make sure before putting them in my tank. Cheers-

I collect rocks too. I give it a good scrubbing, rinse. Pour hot water on it, rinse. Soak it for 2 to 3 days, air dry for another day then throw 'em in the tank. No casualties so far.

They will be safe to use after a good cleaning. I use HOT water and a wire brush to clean any rocks I use in my tanks.

Oddball posted some good stuff about the various ways rocks can affect your water and leach stuff a week or two ago... Someone can probably dig up that thread. I will say no one who commented is likely qualified to tell you those rocks are fish safe... unless the rock can be accurately 100% ID'ed it as a rock that's known to be fish safe already.

This could be it. Hope this helps:

if your really concerned, clean them well then let them "soak/leach" in a bucket of water for a couple of weeks.

(porous rocks are more troublesome than river stones though)
