I currently have a 6" female JD in 55 gallon. I was in my lfs yesterday and they have EBJDs for sell, which are very uncommon for this area. I have been doing a lot of research and found out that EBJDs max out at 8".

So I was thinking about getting one to either pair up with my female or at least become a tankmate. I figured I would run this past everyone on here and see what you guys thought before I went out and did it.

Are you trying to create BGJD? Id say its at bad idea unless thats your goal. Female would more than likely stress a ebjd to death. Escepially a younger one. 55gal is a little close quarters for breeding JD anyway. Firemouths would be better suited in there.

Well breeding is my goal. I have breed convicts and rainbows at this point, and I would have say that breeding is one of my favorite aspects of the hobby. Breeding an EBJD and JD most likely will not result in EBJD fry as it all comes down to genes, but I would be happy with just regular JD fry.

To prevent stress I will put up a divider until the EBJD grows large enough to remove it and at that point they will be more familiar with each other.

If it doesn't work out I could always grow it out and put it in my 75 with my GT and Sev. (after I remove my FM of course)

22.5 gal isnt mush grow room ey? Im pretty sure EBJDxJD results in 25-50% blue gene jd. Then i believe those fry are crossed back with the Parent EBJD to result in a mixture of EBJD BGJD and 25% normal Jd. Im not 100% positive on that, just what ive heard around.
Id suggest getting 6 smaller cichlids and wait for a pair. Really a 75gal is necessary if you want to breed some larger species. My 90gal may not even be enough for my tex and red tex to breed in.
EBJD are really for the experienced breeders, but great job on getting rainbows to breed :D
