My water has been a little cloudy in my 120 gallon tank and I was thinking of ways to clear it up. All of my tests come back fine, 0 ammonia, 20ppm nitrate, 0 nitrite, and ph is 7.2. Its just not as clear as I want it. Right now I have a 20 gallon sump for filtration with a 700gph return pump. I have a 15W inline uv sterilizer that I am not using. I am thinking of putting in another pump in the sump and run water through the uv sterilizer and then back into the tank. The pump that will power the uv sterilizer is around 500 gph. My question is would this be worth it? Does all of the return water need to run through the uvsterilizer to make it effective? I don't want to redo all the plumbing because I just bought a larger tank and will taking this one down in a few weeks.

You can add a powerhead, connect the output of it to a hose, and tie a paint strainer bag to the hose's end. Works great if what's clouding your tank is just particulates.

Well I went ahead a hooked up the uv sterilizer with a seperate pump and it has already made a significant difference. Its only been a few hours so I think by tomorrow the tank should clear up.

I see. Sounds like it might have been algae or bacteria after all. Glad you've got it figured out.
