I have been looking around the internet for some large filters for my DIY build. I'm pretty sure everybody on here knows about it so I won't explain it. But my dad wanted to change the size because he felt the previous 40" wide was "too small" so he wants the new dimensions to be 94" long by 48" high by 40" tall. This was his choice. Not mine. But now the tank will be like 800 gallons. So I'm thinking of a 3000 gallon pond filter just to be safe that the tank is filtered "enough". I found this filter http://www.thatpetplace.com/pressurized-uv-bio-pond-filter-3000-gallon. I was thinking of getting this and a large skimmer type filter. I can maybe make a section of the tank that's 4" deep by 48" wide by 39 3/4" tall. This will be on one side of the tank and it will allow for any excess food to flow over. This water will go down through a bunch of bio media into a pvc pipe that's 3" thick. All the media will be stacked to the top and at the bottom of the media there will be a "slope" so that all water going through the media goes down the "slope" and into the pvc pipe. This pipe will lead into a 100 gallon sump which has more media in it. I will have plants and a ton of different small fish and a bunch of crayfish and shrimp. I will run this tank before I run main tank. This will allow for any excess material in the sump to be eaten. So if I run this sump and that 3000 gallon pond filter with uv sterilizer, will that be enough filtration? Also the filter doesn't say anything about intakes and output pipes
. I'm thinking I would have to put my own pipe lines with a very strong pond pump connected to an intake line. So basically these filters work by water going from in the tank through the pond pump into the canister, then from in there the water will flow through the media and past the uv sterilizer, then it flows back through here and up into the return pipe. Is this how these filters work? Does anyone have any video examples of this? Thanks everyone for your help. Please no comments on the build just on the questions I'm asking. I will ignore any of these unrelated comments

Keep in mind when considering pond filters, they are not designed for heavy bioloads as would be kept in a tank.

Take a look at the DIY build sticky for some filtration ideas.

The design in this build is a favorite of mine. Just a simple sump and 5 gallon buckets place in holes drilled in the top, full of bio media and filter media. I also used this method on my tank and it works great. You can see what I did by going to the link in my sig.
