I was at my local fish store and saw this stuff and I think it would work okay I don't like sand but this seems like its still small enough for the rays to bury themselves if they wanted to

I have seen rays bury themselves in heavier pebbles. I would only be concerned with how sharp those are; if smooth, you will have no problem. In my opinion a sand substrate or bare bottom tank is the best for rays. You don't want a substrate that will trap nitrates and release them into the tank when moved around. In my tank I only have an inch of sand substrate for that very reason. A substrate that is smooth, and wont change water parameters is what you want to aim for. Hope this was helpful.

Rays need substrate its second nature for them to dig for food

Rays have two forms of defence

Step 1 bury themselves
Step 2 sting

No substrate bare bottom go directly to step 2

I'm using caribsea super naturals peace river. It's 1-2mm were as torpedo beach is 0.5-1mm. A little bigger than course sand but smooth and they are able to bury. The other plus is my circulating pump in the pond won't suck it up like sand.
