So pretty much a garbage can with a hole near the top and a hole near the bottom.

Top pump sucks water in ,bottom pump pushes it out. (800+ GPH pumps)

Gravity helps push the water through the filter.

Would this work ?? Its for a 600 gallon ,so it has to be able to haul some *** when it comes to filtering.

My crappy MS paint pictures helps get the idea across.

Well the water would auto siphon into the canister and fall to the bottom then a pump would put it back into the tank. One strong pump would work but the hardest part is getting the whole system airtight!! Maybe try a diy sump, many informative threads on here!

Use a pump at the bottom to push the water back to the tank. There's a thread going on DIY FX5 using a 5 gallon bucket I believe. He was saying the lid sealed itself pretty well because the pressure was pulling the lid on tighter with the siphon pressure. I don't know how it's been doing long term, but the thread was posted within the last 6 months if I remember right.

mmmm...O.k...

I'm not doing a sump because I don't like them :P

I was thinking the pump at the bottom would pull the water out faster then it siphons in ,but it should be fine without the top pump ??

Also I'm not aiming for any sort of vaccume here ,as its so large it would hard to seal ,it would "suck in" when sealed and it would be no fun to open/get the vaccume going. I'de just suck on the top tub to get the siphon going ,and one the bin is almost full flip the pump on and its good to go.

There would be a lid too ,but more for keeping stuff from falling in the filter if anything....

You are going to end up with water leaking all over the place. The force from water is the surface area of the container x the psi. The larger the surface area the higher the force you have to content with.

I love my $210 DE pool filter in my signature. Best filter I have ever had!

If you must do a diy canister then you really need to start with a very stout container. If I did a diy canister I would get a stainless steel cornelous keg. They are the kegs that soda pop used to come in before they switched to cardboard boxes. You can get cornelous kegs at any micro brew supply store for very reasonable. I see them usually going for about $30 - $40. Excellent price for a stainless steel canister!

$210 pool filter = no for me :P

So how will the garbage can leak ?? Last time I checked plastic garbage cans don't leak, and I know they can hold up well full of water...

I could probably find a big 'ol metal keg though...

i think it would work but i would reverse the whole thing and siphon water out of tank to go to bottom of barrel then have it filter up thru filter filter medium and then use pump out of top and back to tank. then the water is forced thru filters and you get less bypass, especially when your filters get some muck on them.
