I've got a 55 gallon tank that i'm setting up and i was originally going to go with demasoni in it but i can't seem to get them right now, so i've decided to go with maingano. I'm going with them since they're blue/black, a smaller mbuna and monomorphic.

Some question now:

Is the m/f ratio important with them? I know with demasoni the m/f ratio isn't too important as long as you overcrowd and don't have too many males.

Will they be okay with my yellow labs and acei? I have 3 of each with a plan to add 3-4 female labs in the near future? I might keep my acei in the grow out tank and not move them over to the 55 gallon.

What's a good starting number for them? I'm thinking 12-15. They're going to be around 1" when i get them.

ratio is important yes. they are melanochromis so they tend to be aggressive with the females. 1:6 is probably ideal. yes, they will be fine with labs and acei. if you can do 12-15 juvies that is great. just realize as they grow up you will need to weed out the males and hope to end up with the 1:6 or 7 ratio.

In a 55 you can easily go with 2 males and 7 or 8 females along with your labs and acei. Keep the rock work heavy and you will be good to go.
