i have been looking at making an overhead filter for as little as possible so was looking through my spares to see what i had lying around to make it and i came across a powerhead that is only for circulating the water.

its one of these .. http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Aquarium-Powe...7?pt=UK_Pet_Supplies_Fish&hash=item2a0ce993f3

now i was going to use this as the pump to get the water to the filter but the outlet on it is very small and would be hard to get a pipe connected to it.

so my idea is to get a small water tight container big enough to get the pump in. the container will have a screw cap so i can get to the pump for maintenance. i will drill a hole is the bottom and seal a pipe in and connect that to the in of the pump and a pipe in the top that will go to the filter.

basically what will happen is the pump will suck water from the tank and pump it into the container. as the container fills the water will be pushed out the top pipe and into the filter.

now in my head this will work but i just need to check if it actually will. i would just give it a go but my silicone has not arrived yet and due to torn thigh muscles cant go out and buy any, just have to wait in the house for parts to turn up :(

any input or ideas would be great

had a play with the pump in the sink and the pump without the cap on and will almost fire the water as high as i need it to pump. so im going to have a trial run tomorrow and see if it works.
