building a sump for my 400 gallon tank. Thinking of making the sump 72"long 18"wide 13" high(in order to place it under the stand). Pump is rated at 1200gph. overflow tubes (2) will be 1" and return lines will be 3/4".
Will the sump be too long to hold a high enough water level for the pump so that it doesn't run dry? and will this size sump be big enough for this tank?

what kind of pump is it cause there are some that dont need to be submerged and you just need a pipe running to them then to the tank

I would make the overflow tubes bigger and make the return 1" lines.
Is the pump rated at 1200gph after you take head pressure into consideration?

Yes. 1" overflows will not flow enough water. I have three one inch overflows and they do not flow what my 1200gph pump will return. Also, there is safety in redundancy. If one overflow gets plugged, by say a dead fish, by having a second overflow the tank will not overflow onto the floor.

And your sump size is fine. Also, you are giving the pump more credit than it deserves. It will not flow enough water to suck one end dry.

Another thing, have you looked at Harbor Freight? they have pumps at about a third of what that other company is charging.

Gotcha, so 1 1/2" it is.

Which pump at Harbor Freight are you referring to?

Nice set-up.

60+ gallon sump

If you have a problem getting the 1.5" overflows to syphon move back to 1.25" pvc and use 3 of them. You can't go any bigger tho, without having the bottom end under water, which would mean an up-flow filter...to hard to clean & if power goes out gunk falls from filter material into sump.

And Harbor Freight RULES :headbang2

( & is addictive  )
