Thats my idea for the sump i plan on building out of my spare 10 gallon for my 55. The bucket will be a 5 gallon bucket as well so ill have a 15 gallon sump if you want to get technecil. As for overflows im not 100% sure on how to make them, not what i no is they should look like this.

thats not showing up right, i doesnt show the spaces.

this should work, youll need to have some good lights for the plants. but with a tank that size why dont you just put the plants in the tank, there isnt that much room under a 55.

Sorry for the messed up picture ill make it on paint this time. The 10 gallon is gonna be in the desk under the 55 gallon so there will be more then enough room for it and its just gonna be java fern so i shouldmt need a GREAT light but i will buy a decent one for sure. The reason why i cant put them in the tank is because its going to have a Jack Dempsey, Green Terror, Firemouth and Convict cichlid which WILL destroy the plants so there safest in the 10 gallon, The bucket is going to be the main media container and the 10 gallon with be mostly plants and some more media just to catch any plants gunk that will fall off.

there are better plants for removing nitrates and amonia . i like Elodea Crispa it grows really fast under less than great lighting . java ferns are slow growing .

i like your design but i think the water will have a tendancy to flow over the top of the refuge area than into it and circulate . might wanna make the water enter the tank from the top throught the media and out into the bottom of the planted area . also if you build the planted area up a bit with egg creat with screen or something over it you could run an ugf as well to help with bio filtration .
well thats what i think good luck

Heres two pictures i made for the overflows. Sorry for the wacky angle on the FRONT view.

Oops i forgot the check valve on the FRONT VIEW but it ok ill remember =P I wont be able to use a undergravel filter in the plant ref, its going to be that special plant "healthy" sand and it will just clog it up and become a pain.
