Hi

I used to be a member on predatoryfish.net a couple of years ago, ever since it was hosted on some free forum site which name I can't remember now. Apparently my profile didn't transfer when the site was renamed from predatoryfish, but anyway, i'll get to the point.

I am currently working on programming a fish site, with profiles and such. I am going to make a good site, with fish profiles, photo hosting and maybe something more, I haven't decided.

I do have a couple of questions for you, which would be great if you could try to answer.

  • Would you like to write short fish profiles for money?
  • What would you say is needed fish-site-wise?
  • Any special comments on how to make it a good site

I am an experienced web developer, and currently run a site that has over 120k visitors per day. Now I want to do something for my hobby so I won't get bored with webdesign alltogether.

Hope I didn't ramble on too much with this first post of mine, and feel free to reply with any ideas you might have.

1) sure.... if the money is good enough. I'd prolly charge $5 per half-hour's-effort profile tho
2) Photographs. Tons and tons of photographs. At least 5 different photos per fish. You realize those eat alot of bandwidth right.
3) make it purdy! water and plantlife and real fish in the background and such.

If you are serious pm me.
I'm also willing to fact check.

Bandwidth smandwidth, I currently have 3 servers with alot of extra bandwidth to burn. Actually my current site is using around 13tb per month, so a few fishy pictures aren't gonna make me cry and grab my wallet ;)

About price, I was thinking ca. $5 per high quality profile. Everyone can write many profiles, so this could prove to be some easy and fun money. I was thinking about beginning with maybe 100 profiles to begin with, the most popular fishes of course, and then more as the site develops.

I have alot of ideas, and 2 free weeks to program it and some money to spend, so i'm thinking it will be good.

If you are interested in writing for me, send me a mail or reply here with an email address so I can put you down and email you when the time has come.

What is really missing out there is information on rare fish. It isn't too difficult to find tons of information (most of it wrong) on common fish, but it is often difficult to find good information on rare fish. I would love to participate in this as I would love to have a one stop shop of knowledge so to speak.

Sounds good, but i'd probably be starting out with the popular fish, and with correct information on them.
Reason why i'd prefer to do it that way is because... well.. they're popular... That way I could build up traffic and then start out with the obscure fish we all love :)

I haven't fully decided though, and will try to keep everything mixed to begin with at least.

I've also been thinking if I should make this freshwater only or saltwater and freshwater... Any comments on that?

I would of course keep the two separated, but it'd sure be alot easier if people could go to one place to get all information they need...
But then again, it's probably best to start small ;)

Well how about a list of all profiles you are looking to get? I'm currently documenting my RTC's growth, so that may be a worthy addition. Let me know what you need and I can help you out.

I haven't made that list yet, I was just posting here to air the idea and see if anyone was interested... And apparently people are :)

I'll get some kind of list ready soon and post it here and let you fight over who's getting what fish ;)

I would love to see a comprehensive site of fish profiles that was,
!.) accurate
2.) cross referenced by both scientific name and common name, and grouped by family
3.) included at least one good photo of the standard appearence and one of each of the more common varients and showed to good effect what made that fish different from simalar species
4.) gave information on max size and growth rate
5.) gave usual temperment
6.) gave temperature,ph,water hardness, and salinity requirements
7.) gave some idea of lifestyle preferences, ie, shoaling or intolerent of conspecifics, burrower, bottom dweller, mid water, or top water, open water swimmer or plant lurker, etc.
8.) dietary requirements
9.) area of natural occurance including water type such as swamp, lake, small stream, etc.

I would also like it to mention any special problems or needs such as a hypersensitity to salt or meds.

I would like to see this done for every fish that could be possibly kept in a home aquarium.
I think your best bet is to start with freshwater fish as there is a larger target audience.
I am also interested in seeing your prefered format including minimum and maximum number of words.
