Hey guys, I will be getting either a nikon d3000 or the d5000 within the next two weeks (possibly by the end of this week) and I'm trying to decide which to get. The thing is, the d5000 I've been looking at is refurbished (can't afford a new d5000), but the d3000 is new. I've been told to avoid getting a refurbished cam, but the only real reason I've been given was that it only has a 90 day warranty as opposed to a 1 year warranty. So which would you choose (and please give your reasons for your choice also)?

-btw, new d3000 is $449, refurb d5000 is $519.95; free shipping on both.

i would just get the new d3000

I dont think I would be afraid of getting refurbished but I agree with just getting the d3000, I hear good things about them and I dont think you would even notice the 5000 being any better, just use the extra cash towards a nice lens/lenses, I really like my 55mm f1.8 for shooting my aquarium, I have a canon though, not sure of the nikon equivalent but im sure they have one.

Nope I would never. I've seen some shady business practice on what they considered as refurbish. I'll take my chance with a used camera than refurbished. The good thing about refurbish is that it has a full warranty but if it breaks then be prepare to deal with the headaches of warranty claims.

Well everything I've read comparing the two has said that the d5000 is a much better camera over all, with more features, better picture quality, etc., so I was thinking that if I could get the d5000 for just 70 more dollars, then it would be a good deal, but apparently I was wrong.

Look at the length of the warranty on a refurbished camera. It's usually something like 90 days. I'd pass.
Yeah, the d5000 has a 90-day, the d3000 has a 1-year. I guess I'll just get the d3000, it's cheaper anyway. :) Thanks for the replies.

Well since it was from Adorama and was refurbished by Nikon, I figured it probably wouldn't be a problem, but I'll heed your warnings anyway and just get the d3000. And since it's cheaper, I'll be able to get it sooner, too. :D

The D5000 is a better camera and has many features that the D3000 does not have. The D5000 is closer to the D90 in features. It's a big step up from the D3000. There are many sites that allow one to do a side-by-side comparison of various cameras. The OP probably should try and buy a new D3000 or just save your money and wait until you have enough for a new D5000. Don't settle or compromise your desire. Be patient and get what you really want.
