I am a chemical engineer first of all. I thought I would let you all know that because I am relatively new to this forum.

I have been thinking about doing some freelance research into if there are any chemicals that could actually preserve bio media that is already cycled and has a good bacteria colony in it.

The only thing is with what I am thinking right now is that I would have to work on trying things that have preservative capabilities, but would also allow the bacteria to be almost in a sense reactivated either by warming it up or adding another chemical agent included with the filter.

The other thing is that it would have to be something that is non-lethal or even harmful to fish.

The other thing that I'm concerned about is say a startup filter like this cost an extra 15-20$ like I'm guessing it will if I can figure it out. How many of you would be willing to fork out the extra cash to avoid the 6 week waiting period to cycle the tank?

The reason I am just now bringing this up is because in my other forum http://www.monsterfishkeepers.com/fo...d.php?t=407319 the filter I used to cycle the tank in 24 - hours has been in the fridge since last fall when I turned off my pond filter for the winter. I useed something that I thought would work and voila it did. I'm just trying to decide if this is something I could make money off of or would it be a dead product. After the first day I had already cycled the tank and went from 6 ppm ammonia to 6 hours later 0 ammoni 0.25 nitrite and 20 ppm nitrate.

Promises, promises..
Other than you, who else has tried this.
Friends, neighbors, someone you bumped into at a LFS?
Man, there is a wheelbarrow full of products that claim to cycle a tank in extraordinarily short periods of time.
If your product lives up to independent testing, it will sell.
Admittedly, it will be a small group who would be your customers.
Most new fish owners fire up a tank and toss in fish without a clue.

Proven bacteria in a bottle products already exists (tetra safe start and seachem stability). Most bacteria already have built in mechanisms to deal with extreme condition. Also bacteria colonies that require refrigeration have already been tried and have failed coomercially.

Uhg thanks guys. I'm kind of determined to make this work thought. I know about Seachem as well as Prime and Cycle, but those are starting colonies. I'm talking about a precolonized filter that you pop in your filter and run for a few hours and bam. And yeah I know that 95% of people don't care nearly as much about there fish as we do, but I mean hey maybe it would work? I have my second and third trial tanks waiting water testing as we speak.

Well, good luck to you.
Who knows, many a large corporation started with some little niche product.

Id buy it if it worked like you say, if you can show a chain store that it works and they start carrying your product you could become a very wealth man.

See I am really good friends with the owner of my LFS and I talk to him a lot about trying to get in stuff for me that is rare in a little town in Indiana. I went to his house with a cooler and some old, but preserved, filter media to cycle it. Showed up and we did it on his 220 gal. 2 hours later the tank had already bloomed and cleared back. Needless to say he was impressed.
