1st floor living room, basement is under it. I want to fill up the 75g (with 30g sump underneath) for just a few minutes to see how loud it runs. If it's quiet, the 55g will move to the basement and the 75g will go where the 55 is now. Is this going to put too much weight on the floor and cause a disaster?

In the other half of the house (behind where I'm standing), the floor joists run parallel to the 75g tank. Not sure about the side of the house where the 75g is currently. Perpendicular to the 75g is the shorter length on that side, so I guess it's possible that they could be perpendicular.

You want to make sure that the joists run perpendicular to the tank, I have a 130 on the second floor and it runs perpendicular to the joists so its not causing too much stress on one joint. I did also have an 80 that ran parallel to the joists and that was fine so I think it depends on the certain joists. If you can I would try and measure them to see there thickness, that wall is probably a supporting wall so the joists would be well supported there. I would try it.

I think you should be fine.
I currently have a 75g and a 30g running parallel to the floor joist under it. The wall they are against is a load baring wall. I am considering putting a floor jack under it though. Just for added security longer term.

Success! Did a test run on the 75g and my living room isn't in the basement :). Still makes me a bit nervous but I'm already draining it. It's quieter than the 55g if anything, so the 55 will move downstairs and the 75 will go in its place against the outside wall. Thanks for the advice.
