before anyone tells me to search there are some very vague answers out there and i am looking for something definitive.
i have a lima shovel nose catfish about 5" and his tail was shredded by one of my bichirs on thursday night. I immediately dosed with melafix, and today i am doing a 50% w/c and i am going to dose the rest of the melafix that i have on hand and I was wondering how much salt to add. i have epsom salt not aquarium salt, and it is a 125 gallon tank.
also if there is anything else i could do it would be appreciated.

Epsom salt and aquarium salt are two different things and are not used for the same purposes.

epsom salt cannot be used for healing?

bump for answers

No, any salt will not really help a wound heal. Really what you need to do is seperate the antogonist from the victim, give the victim pristine water conditions and it will heal up fine. There is really no need for medications or salt, unless you start to see fungus. Then treat for the fungus.

ok well removing him isnt really an option, the catfish is growing quick soon he will be too big to mess with just want 2 make sure he heals up. it is no longer an open wound, just torn fins

it is healing more and more by the day i am going to add a little salt tonight

Ixnay on the salt. If he's healing up fine leave it be. Salt is not the cure all everyone thinks it is. It's usefull for treating ich and for stabilizing osmotic shock, and that is it.
