My 3.5" Pseudotropheus crabro recently developed circular wounds on both sides of his operculum. The wound on the left side is more severe with skin hanging off of it. It appears to just be a large black spot on the right side and the left side has a whitish middle to the black spot, because of the open lesion in the skin. I though maybe it was just "battle-wounds" from some of my more dominent fish, but the fact that the wounds are on both sides of his head in the same spot is odd. There also isn't much in the way of bullying in my tank because I have so many fish. He doesn't appear to be stressed out at all; he's eating, doesn't seem lethargic, and his color is bright like normal. I'm just wondering if this is some common, or rare, disease that I've overlooked or if could be rubbing wounds from a gill parasite. Any input it much appreciated as I don't like worrying about my fish friends.
