No, they are not related. I believe that the closest realation to cichlids in the ocean, besides the few types that actually can live in the ocean, are damsel fish.
damsels/clownfish are the closest relative, but wrasses are closely related to them to some degree as well I believe
yeah i agree, clowns and damsels are, they are both part of the same evolutionary branch, only one fills the niche in freshwater and the other in salt. its understandable for them to be similar infact way down the line they are related somewhere
