My Gar, Thor, has been acting strangly swimming up and down on the side of the tank and making a spot in the gravel on a daily basis. He's fat, comfortable, and all the water parameters are fine. He keeps doin that only with his nose. Is he lonely? Do i need to do something? Please give advice if you can. TY

There was a thread about this not too long ago. Also, a debate on whether they see a reflection or not. Both of my Floridas do this. Still not sure why, but it doesnt seem to cause any harm, so we are not worried about it.

gars can definitely see a reflection. depending on how frantically and consistently they are doing this, it would an indication of some sort of stressor in the tank. keep checking your water parameters regularly...particularly pH as gars are more sensitive to this. are there other fishes in the tank that may be harassing the gar? how long as the fish been doing this for? either way, this is not spawning behavior, so that can be ruled out.--

ok just watched the video and read your sig...

gars should NOT be kept with plecos under any circumstances, the risk of slime sucking is generally high and unpredictable, and can often times be fatal. also, cichlids aren't the greatest choice with gars either, as they tend to pick on them, even if the gar is of larger size. so i would relate this behavior to stress from tankmates and maybe some other issues not quite evident.

multiple gars tend to keep each other calm, but this will not help if you still have the cichlid and (especially) pleco in there, remove them, maybe get another gar and then see what happens--

Thing is never had a prob with the terrors and the adonis just chills under rocks all day. No peck marks no wounds no missing slime. He's perfectly happy, fat gar. I am getting my 220 2morrow and ill stick the terrors in there asap. Btw how would a motoro be in with the gar and possibly another gar? Also should i get the same species or change it up?

mixing gars is usually not a problem and rays and gars are good combo.... just make sure the ray is smaller than gar...my old motoro was 12"+ and tried to kill my 7" Tgar....

yea atm i'm thinkin of a 7" motoro and my gar is at 16" or so. Couldn't get the time to get the tank here but will get next weekend. (pics to come)

gars and rays is generally a crap-shoot. gars and plecos is generally always asking for trouble in the long run. in the latter regard, advice has been given many many times, keeping the combo just jeopardizes the gars and is overall an unwise choice--
