I hope you realize these are not the same species. VERY VERY often confused. Actual mudpuppies(Necturus and Proteus genuses) are native to the southeastern us and are rarely seen in pet stores. The same nomenclature confusion extends to include axolotls(Ambystoma mexicanum), tiger salamanders(Ambystome tigrinium), water dogs.....these common names are NOT interchangeable as most people tend to believe. You should do some research before you go shopping so you know what species you want and how to identify it when you see it. The differences are bigger than just appearance. For example(hope you know this part if youve been looking already), larval tiger salamanders look very much like axolotls, except they metamorphose into terrestrial salamanders upon maturity. Axolotls(Ambystoma mexicanum), on the other hand, never metamorphose due to a natural adaptation to their natural habitat becoming more arid and the resulting loss of a lot of area waterways. And although they retain their larval state, they get quite large, at about 1 foot. Another consideration with axolotls- I see you live in Miami. These guys NEED cooler temps, and that may be hard for you to maintain. A chiller for an adequate sized tank(a good sized tank is another thing you have to take into consideration) is not cheap. As oddball said, you can find lots of info on the web. heres a few sites- http://inky.50megs.com/axolotldiffs.html, http://www.caudata.org/, http://www.geocities.com/Yosemite/4301/calixto.htm
There are not a lot of books on axolotls, but Peter Scott wrote a good one called simply Axolotls. I have experience with both Axoltols and Tiger salamanders, so if you decide these guys are for you, and have any more questions, I'd be happy to help
i am looking for Ambystoma mexicanum, not tiger salamanders and i have done research and can id them if i see one. I also have two friends that have had them for years now and would love to share their tips and knowledge with me . well, good for you! Im glad you have an idea what youre getting in to. Ive kept both, and have had to rescue some from people who "did their research". I've also had ongoing online conversations with people who didn't know what species they had, let alone how to keep it! Good luck, and if you have any questions or need anything, feel free to pm me! cuz I too. theyre AMAZING creatures and I LOOOVE them and miss keeping them. Enjoy! btw- what color phase are you getting?
