try a garden store, or landscape and garden place. they have lots of rocks, slates, pebbles, fine sand, etc...just make sure you rinse it good.

Along time ago I was looking to pick up some or rock slates. The area i checked out was in Irwindale somewhere I believe. It may have been off arrow pkwy, but anyways if you call around you might be able to find a place. They sell the stuff this stuff at wholesale, and will let you pick out your own pieces. Sorry I don't remember the exact location, but hope this helps.
