Not sure what is going on but it almost seems to be breeding related. I have a fish that we think is either a fader flowerhorn or a trimac. It is a female. She over the last few days has been showing more color and has been more aggressive towards the other fish in the tank except on.... She and our blood parrot are following each other around and teaming up on other fish. They have worked together to dig 2 dimples about 3in in diameter in the back of the tank under some driftwood cover. My Question for all the brains of this issue would be... Is it possible that they are "together" and babies are on the way? what should i be doing and looking for. The female trimac/fader flowerhorn does seem to have a enlarged belly, but im not sure if it just looks that way cause of the color change or what. Any and All advice or info would be helpful here. Thanks in advance

rolf!! there hilarious! lol it might be possible if the male is fertile but im pretty sure one sex of parrot fish are sterile but i cant remember if its the male or female that sterile

male parrots are typically sterile. and it's definitely quite possible they are going to give breeding a go.

There are many cichlids out there that will try and breed very frequently and with odd partners. Parrots will try and breed with so many different cichlids, unfortunately 9 times out of 10 the males are sterile. Female parrots are the ones that will lay eggs for anyone. So what you will probably see is the two of them clear a surface in your tank and your female trimac will lay hundreds of eggs. Your male parrot will rub his stomach on the eggs as he swims over them. This is his attempt at fertilizing the eggs. Unfortunately nothing will happen due to the male being sterile and after two days the eggs will all turn white in color, which means the eggs are no longer capable of producing life, and the female will then eat the eggs. Sad but thats what will most likely happen. Please let us know if something else ends up happening. Good Luck

well, so far i have not seen any eggs down there in either spot, but the male parrot is still sitting on the spots guarding and the female trimac is still full of attitude. one of the "nest" like spots has now had the gravel all moved and is almost to the glass on the bottom. guessing thats a sign i am not getting lil baby fish?

doesn't happen instantly, i've had my fish together for about a year and they only spawned recently. and not all will pair for sure.

update: blood parrot looks depressed, trimac is still a ***** but a little less i guess, and the "nest" spots have been leveled back with the rest of the substrate.
